Laugh hard.
Drive rough.

Laugh & Rough is a self-drive adventure in a Suzuki Jimny.
Forest tracks, river crossings, mountain roads, big views — the places you'd never take your own car. You go anyway, and you laugh the whole way down.

Things your own car will never do

The scratches, the mud, the screaming.
All of it is part of the deal.

01

Scratches Welcome

Roads you would never risk your own car on. Go at them properly.

02

Deep into the wild

Mountain, sea, forest track. The Jimny keeps going where the road stops.

03

A mission at every base

Riddles built out of the story of the ground you are standing on.

04

Top 5 Screams

Every yelp and belly laugh, cut into a film and sent to you afterwards.

05

Safety

You can only go all in because everything behind you is already covered.

A different adventure at every base

Laugh & Rough is not one place.
Mountain, sea and forest track — each base is built around the ground it sits on.

Nishiwaki

NISHIWAKI

Into the forest, after the legend. Forest tracks, a stop to play in the river, and a story that belongs to this valley.

Every base hides
its own mission

Driving is only half of it.
Each base has its own riddles and missions, and they take you into country — and stories — you would never have found on your own.

FOREST MISSION
Nishiwaki|
Forest Mission

Built on the Golden Rooster legend that still hangs around this valley. You climb the forest tracks reading the signs the land gives you. It only works here.

Into the forest, after the legend
OCEAN MISSION
Shirahama|
Ocean Mission

Coastline and lookouts. The shape of the land is the clue. Wide open, salt in the air, and unmistakably Shirahama.

Sea air, and the good views
NEW STORY
Each Base|
New Story

Every base we open gets a mission of its own, built out of whatever that place already has.

A story that belongs to its ground

Six steps. That is the whole adventure

Book it, get in the Jimny, drive into the trees.
Laugh & Rough would rather you spent the day enjoying it than preparing for it.

The best of the day comes back to you as photos and film. It does not end when you hand the keys over.

Wild. Not reckless.

Laugh & Rough is not just letting you loose in the woods. Insurance, live monitoring and emergency response are all in place — that is exactly what lets you go all in.

01

Unlimited insurance

Third-party, property and passenger cover with no ceiling. If the worst happens, it is covered.

02

GPS on every car

Base can see where each car is. If one sits still somewhere it should not, we come and check on you.

03

SOS with no signal

An SOS button that works where the phone network does not. Help is one press away.

04

Cameras front, sides and in

Dashcam and cabin cameras record the whole drive — for safety, and for working out what happened if anything does.

05

Emergency kit on board

First aid, torch, whistle, emergency blanket and a multi-tool in every car. Enough to stay calm a long way from anywhere.

Three things visitors ask first

Renting a car in rural Japan sounds harder than it is.
Here is everything that actually matters before you book.

01

You can drive here

Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention, or an accepted foreign driving licence. We take a photo of the physical licence of every driver on the day, so it has to be the actual card — not a copy or a photo of one. There is no limit on how many people share the driving.

02

Getting to Nishiwaki

About 70 minutes by car from either Osaka or Kobe. Driving is much the easiest way to get here, and there is parking at the base. Once you have booked we send you a map with the meeting point on it.

03

Japanese is not required

There is a translation device at the base, and the phone we lend you handles the riddles, directions and SOS. The missions are built around landscape and observation rather than language, so they work in any language.

Still unsure about something? The FAQ covers what to wear, what the tracks are like, and what happens in bad weather.
